Dilation is used to relieve swallowing
problems that stem from a narrowed
esophagus or esophageal sphincter
(muscle between esophagus and
stomach).
A dilator or an air-filled balloon
is inserted into the esophagus
through an endoscope. The dilator
is expanded to stretch the muscles
of the esophagus or esophageal
sphincter. After treatment a patient
can usually resume a regular routine
and diet.
